Antonio Mugica

Today’s blog is dedicated to a small bio-inspired robot that has caught Antonio Mugica’s attention. This is Cyberplasm, a tiny prototype humanoid robot. Cyberplasm, when it is realized as a finished product will measure less than 1cm in length.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are developing this robot for the detection of human diseases. In order to do this, Cyberplasm integrates advanced microelectronics with the latest in biomimicry. It will have its own electronic nervous system, equipped with “eye” and “nose” sensors.

The robot will include components that respond to light and will also contain chemicals similar to biological systems. It is designed to mimic the sea lamprey which has a primitive nervous system and an excellent swimming capability. The ability to swim will permit this robot to access the human body and detect, in the future, a wide range of diseases!
